Thank you for this thoughtful commentary on the personal style discourse. As a lifelong fashion person and professional, I’ve struggled identifying my personal style beyond Preppy-ish, don’t even ask me to come up with three words…and I agree, that your style doesn’t have to be defined, it can just be what you like. It’s supposed to be fun after all.

Joan Didion, Paul Newman and JFK never had three words, they understood intuitively how to dress themselves and had great quality clothes at their disposal. I’ve arrived at believing you either get it or you don’t, but if you don’t you just need to give it time, it’ll click and then you’ll just know what works and what doesn’t

I think the average dresser wants immediate results, getting overwhelmed with the process rather than enjoying it, and that's why the discourse has become so prominent.
