blazers, boat shoes, boots, casual pants, chinos, cords, derbies, down jackets, down vests, eyewear, hoodies, jackets, jeans, knitwear, loafers, OCBDs, outerwear, overcoats, polo shirts, raincoats, rugby shirts, shirts, suits, sunglasses, sweats, caps

Alden

Renowned boot makers, though perhaps best these days for their loafers and derbies. Usually shell cordovan, very much grail pieces but can be found on EBay on occasion.

boots, loafers, derbies

All Blues

Producing a small line of reproduction pieces, particularly iconic outdoor wear: the deep pile fleece jacket, Karakoram Parka, Mountain Parka

outerwear, jackets, down jackets

Aquascutum

British outerwear legends, best for their vintage overcoats which are as excellent as they are plentiful. Whilst they still persist in some capacity today, vintage is almost certainly the way to go.

outerwear, overcoats, raincoats

Arrow

A staple shirtmaker of the twentieth century, and the first to patent the Sanforizing process. Caution is advised, look only for vintage examples, made in USA of 100% cotton.

shirts, OCBDs

Baracuta

Manufacturers of the classic G9 Harrington jacket, a staple in many heritage wardrobes. Also producing overcoats, made in the UK.

jackets, outerwear

Barbarian

High quality rugby shirts, sizes lean on the larger side, made in Canada from very heavy cotton. Often available for good prices on the secondhand market, in unusual colour ways since they are often team jerseys

rugby shirts

Barbour

Iconic British outerwear makers, a Bedale or Beaufort is a welcome addition to most collegiate wardrobes, the Transport and SPey offering more contemporary cropped looks. A wax jacket only gets better and cooler with age, as such we encourage looking secondhand.

outerwear

B.D. Baggies

Shirt makers, well-known for their oxford cloth button downs, prized for their softness and casual feel as a result. Made in the USA.

shirts, OCBDs

Brooks Brothers

Ivy inceptors and original producers of the OCBD. Unfortunately having suffered a fall from grace in recent years. Vintage pieces remain some of the finest ivy pieces going, they were the originals after all.

shirts, OCBDs, jackets, blazers, suits

Cabela's

Longstanding hunting outfitters, particularly good for real-tree camouflage across all garments which can give a streetwear twist to a lot of collegiate looks.

High quality baseball attire, focus is on beautiful 100% wool, Made in USA caps, but also beautiful jerseys.

caps, jackets

Eddie Bauer

Down jacket pioneers, makers of the iconic Karakoram. Having somewhat lost the plot at points, but still a grail outerwear label for many.

outerwear, down jackets, down vests

Edwin

Classic Japanese denim label, modern production is a little oversaturated, it’s best to stick to secondhand, Made in Japan examples.

jeans, casual pants

Engineered Garments

New York based since 1999, known for excellent collaborations and technical reinterpretations of classic garments, yet, for the Ivy dresser the standout is their Workaday button down, an excellent classic OCBD.

shirts, OCBDs, jackets

Evisu

One of the Osaka 5, and perhaps the most fashion forward. Known for their striking seagull and Daicock prints. Early examples, especially those labels “Evis” from the early 90s far transcend their contemporary designer status, authentic recreations of classic denim cuts, with the added affectation of the pocket painting.

jeans

Fitzgerald’s Clothiers

Notably distinct from Fitzgerald (no possessive), regrettably defunct shirtmaker specialising in ivy silhouettes, phenomenal collar roll, back buttons, locker loops.

shirts, OCBDs

Fracap

Italian boot makers, great for the classic alpine hiking boot look and offering personalised made-to-order versions of their designs.

boots

Frizmworks

Most notable for producing outdoor wear reproductions, particularly the Karakoram parka, also a nice line of heavyweight sweats. Made in Korea

outerwear, down jackets, sweats, hoodies

GANT

Stalwart shirtmakers, pioneers of the locker loop. 60s GANT shirts are for many the ideal OCBD. For modern era, secondhand will be the best deals but keep a watchful eye out for poly-blends and slim fit, ask for measurements as they’re not always labeled. There is a lot of product floating around though, which makes it affordable and easy to track down.

shirts, OCBDs, jackets, blazers

Gloverall

Best known as producers of the duffle coat, and still probably the best place to get one

outerwear, overcoats

Guepard Japan

Unbeatable quality for eyewear, though designs tend to suit those with smaller heads.

eyewear, sunglasses

Harley's of Scotland

Makers of knitwear for Drake's and J.Press’ “trim fit”, providing "shaggy dog" style brushed wool crew necks and cardigans.

knitwear

Jacques Soliviere

Unique and contemporary footwear designs, informed by classic looks such that they manage to look fairly timeless. A great way to modernise an otherwise old-school look.

boots, derbies, loafers

Jamiesons of Shetland

Iconic manufacturer of brushed Shetland and Fair Isle sweaters

knitwear

J.M. Weston

French Ivy footwear icons, most notably the 180 loafer, but also a stunning golf derby. Grail prices, but met with justifying quality

loafers, derbies

A truly iconic Ivy label, at least partly responsible for defining what the Ivy style was. Both new and secondhand are really only widely available in the USA.

Kamakura

Japanese shirt makers producing some of the most authentic reproductions of classic Ivy silhouettes. Probably the best OCBD on the market currently.

polo shirts

Lands End

Only worth looking for vintage, but possible to come by some gems with some digging, often at very affordable prices.

shirts, outerwear, casual pants

Lee

Classic jeans manufacturer, look for vintage made in USA, often more affordable for classic straight fit jeans than Levi's from the same era.

jeans

Levi's

The 501 remains the quintessential Ivy jean, the 550 providing a little more room for those who need it. Get them vintage, made in USA, UK, France, wear the hell out of them, cut them into shorts, etc., you know the drill.

Jeans

L.L. Bean

New England outdoor-wear legends. Definitely focus on vintage, particularly flannel shirts, their iconic Maine hunting boots/ rubber mocs, chinos, barn jackets.

shirts, boots, outerwear, chinos, cords, casual pants

Loopwheeler

Damned hard to come by in the West, but this Japanese house probably makes the best sweats in the world.

sweats, hoodies

Lotusse

Dutch shoemakers, unfortunately no longer quite what they once were. Vintage examples are often Goodyear welted. Also produce leather jackets.

loafers, derbies, jackets

Marman of San Fransisco

Now defunct, produced traditional sack jackets in Harris Tweed, including patch pockets and hook vents.

jackets

O’Connells

Made in USA sport coats, suits, shirts etc. all with a strong reference in Ivy style. Family owned and offering custom tailoring services.

blazers, jackets, suits, shirts, knitwear, casual trousers

Orvis

Hunting and fishing outfitters, having produced a wide selection of rugged shirting and outerwear. Very affordable secondhand though tending to be made overseas.

shirts, outerwear

Otterwell

Hard to find information on this label, it seems they are now defunct, but notable for producing popover shirts, an Ivy staple that seems to be regularly overlooked by large houses. Will need to be found secondhand.

Paraboot

Pedigreed French boot makers who have seen a considerable jump in popularity in recent years. Still of very high quality regardless.

boots, loafers, derbies

Pendleton

Producers of wool flannel, usually for rugged shirts. Also good for casual trousers. Plentiful on online secondhand sites, an easy way to ensure you are buying 100% wool flannel.

shirts, casual pants

Pherrows

Japanese casual outfitters, very high quality sweats and casual trousers. Great for building up long-lasting staples.

sweats, hoodies, casual pants

Polo

Pretty synonymous with the "preppy" look, a vast and ever-changing pedigree which can be tricky to navigate. Often very affordable on the used market, depending on location. Vintage will always offer better quality, though it's worth noting that they moved production overseas earlier than other labels. It's worth learning the garment labels to help determine quality.

shirts, OCBDs, chinos, cords, casual pants, jackets, blazers, knitwear, rugby shirts

Rocky Mountain Featherbed

Americana in the mountains, producing some of the highest quality down jackets on the market, as good today as they’ve always been.

down jackets, down vests

Ronning

Simple, premium basics. Some pieces are annoyingly branded, but definitely some worth checking out.

casual pants, boots

Schott

Most notably military outerwear producers, particularly the A2, the iconic leather jacket.

jackets

Sebago

Best known for the Dockside boat shoe, and also not bad in the category of Blake stitched loafers. Their more interesting designs often go on sale.

boat shoes, loafers, boots

Shetland Woolen Co.

The in-house label for Laurence Odie. Ideal for the J. Press "shaggy dog" look (they produce J.Press’ “Classic Fit”), great for those in the UK or Europe where J. Press is somewhat inaccessible.

knitwear

Sierra Designs

Inventors of the 60/40 mountain parka, perhaps staple outerwear in the collegiate wardrobe. In recent years they have kept to their vision as a performance brand, and thus have moved away from their iconic designs but searching vintage returns excellent results.

outerwear, down jackets, down vests

Solovair

The quality interested's Doc Marten, produced in the UK at the original Docs factory. A reasonably affordable label for urban boots and chunky loafers.

boots, loafers

Sunray Sportswear

Made in Japan sweatshirts and tees, traditional loopwheel techniques. One of many excellent loopwheel manufactures out of Japan but more widely stocked in the West than others.

t-shirts, sweats, hoodies

TBD Eyewear

Good quality, well designed eyewear, simple and tasteful enough to go with any outfit.

eyewear, sunglasses

The North Face

Now ubiquitous, and not without unsavoury connotations depending where you are from; however, vintage, or modern Japanese market examples are excellent. Look for brown labels for both.
