Hello! Welcome to The Radar, the partial, spiritual successor to Club Chair Bulletin. Much the same as before, scrapbook style updates on the world of collegiate fashion and anything that happens to be bouncing around on the inside of my head, just a simplified format. Also a move towards including some exclusive content for paid subscribers, the club’s Friday meetings will always be free to attend.

BLACK AND WHITE OUTFIT REFERENCES

I’m starting to feel as though Pinterest is running out of outfit photos from 50s and 60s college campuses to show me. There are only so many, of course, that have survived in physical form, been digitised, and again survived many years of being on the internet. We are always indebted to those who archive and digitise.

On this matter of scarcity though, there are a whole lot more black and white examples than there are colour, as such my mood boards as of late feature a lot more greyscale.

I find looking for inspiration in B&W pics to actually be more helpful in some cases than colour. Focussing just on texture and silhouette, whilst disregarding colour makes it a lot easier to apply a look to your own style, I find. I think it also makes you more aware of tone and contrast, which in turn also improves approaches to colour combinations. Dan from The Second Button recommends the inverse too, looking at photos of your own outfits in black and white, to see if you’re exploring variety beyond that of colour.

Small Favour: If you wouldn’t mind, please share this post, or the club as a whole, with a friend who you think might be interested, it would mean a whole lot. Please also subscribe if you haven’t yet, again, it makes a big difference.

BARBOUR X URBAN RESEARCH

Barbour have been on the grind as of late when it comes to collaboration, Ganni and Noah have seen plenty of attention. Though, as is so often the case, if we turn our heads eastwards we see the Japanese are still doing it better.

The main standout is a transport jacket with a black leather collar, a small change which recontextualises the transport from workwear to streetwear. It’s impressive to see how just one detail can make a garment so much more modern.

A Japanese exclusive, but Urban Research ship worldwide.
